It shouldn't be surprising if the children of immigrants seem rather materialistic, if their parents came to America precisely for the economic opportunity. (As opposed to those who fled political oppression.) Natives who live in the suburbs and urban areas can be just as materialistic and desirous of affluence and material comfort, but as a whole, the group is more diverse. Those who are content with their lot or with a more simple lifestyle, whether here or abroad, do not need to move.
