The media and pundits have been discussing the recently discovered letters by Mother Teresa, in which she writes about the dark night of the soul. (These letters don't reveal anything new--this had been known for a while, though perhaps not the extent.) What do they know about the three stages of the interior life? Nothing. And so they think that the doubt of Mother Teresa is the same as the doubt of someone who hasn't even achieved the purgative stage. Others fail to understand that progress is not marked by feelings but by growth in the virtues and one's prayer life.
