Outgoing Superior Says Order Hopes to Return
But will they have enough Jesuits to send? And will they be orthodox and zealous for the conversion of souls and the handing on of Tradition? I would think that the opportunities for the sort of apostolic work that the Jesuits have done among the intellectual class and the political elites would be limited. How can you have that sort of dialogue with a Communist, when many in the party are not authentic Communists, but just atheists holding onto power? There are no more Confucians in China.
If the Jesuits are failing to preserve the Western intellectual heritage and the harmony between faith and reason in Western countries, what can they hope to accomplish in China, where the emphasis on the practical is even greater, and there is no interest in the speculative?
Perhaps the best thing that could be done would be the resurrection of the Chinese rite, but that too may no longer be relevant. Who understands classical Chinese? (I believe the rite was in classical Chinese, but I could be wrong.)
I'd still like to read a good introductory work to Mohist logic and a comparison with traditional Westernlogic and modern logic.

In this edition of the Reality Report, economics Professor Joshua Farley of the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics at the University of Vermont discusses the false assumptions of dominant economic theory, why this leads to problems, and what an alternative economic system might look like. During the interview, Prof. Farley explains how policies to protect the environment, stem the loss of biodiversity, conserve fossil fuels, and deal with climate change will fail without economic reform that first sets the sustainable scale of the human economy, secondly decides what is a just distribution, and finally allows the market to find the most efficient allocation. Among many publications, Prof. Farley is coauthor with Herman Daly of the college text book "Ecological Economics: Principles and Applications." Will the opera be better than a certain genre of Mandarin songs from the Mainland (such as the propaganda songs for the Communist party, but other non-patriotic songs as well)? Someone should deal with the question whether Chinese vocal music is more limited due to Chinese being a tonal language.
Hm. It's in SF this weekend.
January 11, 12 and 13 -- War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco, CA
To Westernize the opera, Xiao Bai worked with famed librettist Wang Jian. Together, the two artists developed a new production distinct from traditional "Beijing-style" opera (incorporating instrumental music, vocal performance, pantomime, dance and acrobatics). The Western version of "Farewell My Concubine" captures the framework of a classic Italian opera, but is sung entirely in Mandarin. The performances will include English subtitles.

Life in Christ Is Holy Living
The founding story of Christianity is the life of Christ. The Christian religion continues to consist of people's response to Christ's coming as the revelation of God's love: attention to his words; contemplation of his life, his death, and his Resurrection; and obedience to his desire that love of him should be expressed in love for all human beings: no one is to be left out of the circle of that love.
The liturgy of the Catholic Church includes a yearlong "reliving" of the events of the life of Christ, one after the other, and a constant reminder of the stories of people who have paid attention to it, heroically. The liturgical cycle we are experiencing this week is a perfect example of this “reliving” of the events of Christ’s life: Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem is immediately followed by the feast of Stephen’s martyrdom, the feast of the mystical Evangelist John, the martyrdom of the Holy Innocents, the feast of another great martyr -- St. Thomas à Becket, and today’s feast of the Holy Family.
The Church teaches us that we cannot tarry at the stable in Bethlehem but hasten to Galilee and then to the hill of Calvary in Jerusalem where the whole story reaches its extreme moment and summit. As we pass from feast to feast, we move from being admirers to imitators of Jesus, we grow in our discipleship and holiness.
The Beatitudes: Blueprint for Holiness
The beatitudes in Christ's Sermon on the Mount [Matthew 5:1-12] are a recipe for this extreme holiness. Holiness is a way of life that involves commitment and activity. It is not a passive endeavor but rather a continuous choice to deepen one's relationship with God and to then allow this relationship to guide all of one's actions in the world. Holiness requires a radical change in mindset and attitude. The acceptance of the call to holiness places God as our final goal in every aspect of our lives. This fundamental orientation towards God even envelops and sustains our relationship with other human beings. Sustained by a life of virtue and fortified by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, God draws us ever closer to Himself and to that day when we shall see Him face to face in Heaven and achieve full union with Him.
A saint is a friend of God who takes the beatitudes seriously in his or her life. Each of us is called to become God's friend. We grow in friendship with God as we do with others: by being present to God, talking with God, and being generous with God. Here and now, we can find holiness in our personal experience of putting forth our best efforts in the work place, patiently raising our children, and building good relationships at home, at school and at work. If we make all of these things a part of our loving response to God, we are on the path of holiness. This need for good examples is also important in the area of Christian living. For this purpose, the Church encourages devotion to the saints. A saint is one who "has lived [or is living] in the practice of the virtues of his or her state after a manner...that is faithful, constant, ready -- to the point of heroism."
Many think that sainthood is a privilege reserved only for the chosen few. Actually, to become a saint is the task of every Christian, and what's more, we could even say it's the task of everyone! How many times have we thought that the Saints are merely "eccentrics" that the Church exalts for our imitation; people who were so unrepresentative of and out of touch with the human scene? It is certainly true of all those men and women who were "eccentric" in its literal sense: they deviated from the centre, from usual practice, the ordinary ways of doing things, the established methods. Another way of looking at the saints is that they stood at the "radical centre."
We need the example of these holy women and men who had no moderation but only exuberance! They were people with ordinary affections, who took God seriously and were therefore free to act with exuberance. Not measured or moderate, the Saint's response to God's extravagant love is equally immoderate, marked by fidelity and total commitment. G.K. Chesterton said: "[such] people have exaggerated what the world and the Church have forgotten."
"Saints," as the word is used among Catholic Christians today, are those who, in the opinion of other people, have succeeded in this enterprise. The Roman Catholic Church "canonizes" certain saints, placing them on a list (canon) of those given the seal of its approval, after long study and a process of discernment. There are far more saints not in the canon than there are in it; and many a saint in the canon receives little or no veneration from people today: it is always the people who finally decide that someone is, for them, a hero.
And if there was ever an age when young men and women needed authentic heroes, it is our age. The Church understands that saints, their prayers, their lives, are for people on earth, that sainthood, as an earthly honor, is not coveted by the saints themselves. A saint's life is always new and surprising on one hand, but always "the same" on the other hand. The lives of the saints are told and retold on behalf of the listeners, in order to clarify the issues for them, to inspire them, and to confront them with choices that only they can make, for themselves.

More from the niece
She told her dad: "Daddy I'm going upstairs to pray."
From the past two couple of days.
"Popo, Jesus!"
"Where is Jesus?"
"There!" (Points to the side of the couch in the upstairs living room.)
My mom: "What did you say to Jesus?"
"K----, you are good. I like you."
My mom: "What did you say to Jesus.
"I love you Jesus."
"Is Jesus standing there or sitting?"
"No, he is laying there."
And then she did her hammering/hitting/scourging motion. And then she did the hammer sound. "gok gok gok"
"I say, 'Jesus, K---- is sorry.'"
(My mom doesn't know if she said this because of what my mom said about the stations of the cross, and that Jesus was hurt and died because people were bad.)
"Po po come, help Jesus"
"Help Jesus what?"
"Help Jesus up."
Where is Jesus going?
"Jesus is going up?"
"Up where?" And my mom pointed to the ceiling. "Up there?"
"Yes, Jesus is going up."
"What is Jesus wearing?"
"Pajama."
"What is Mama Mary wearing?"
"Pajama too."
My mom: "Does he have boo boo?"
"Yes."
"Where is Mama Mary?"
She pointed to the side of the bed.
"Mama Mary is cooking."
"Angel is with Mama Mary. Angel is cooking with Mama Mary."
"What color is Mama Mary wearing."
"Blue."
"Did you talk Jesus?"
"Yes."
"What is Mama Mary doing?"
Mama Mary hug Jesus.
"Did you hug him too?"
"Yes"
"Did you tong Jesus ngao han?" [scratch itch]
"I scratch his arm."
Today they were watching news about weather, and she saw the results of tornados and floods, cars underwater, collapsed houses.
"Po po, you fix it. Sad."
This afternoon: "Did you see Mama Mary?"
"Yes, she is here." (she pointed to the couch)
"Did Mama Mary sleep with you?"
"Yes, she hug me."
"Where is your angel?"
She pointed to the other side of her.
"Does angel have wing?"
"Yeah."
"Does Mama Mary have a crown?"
"Yeah. K---- put the crown on her head."
Yesterday she bit her sister, and her sister started crying. Of course she got a time-out from her mom, and she was crying and lying on the floor, having a tantrum. Later her dad came home and asked her what happened. "Mommy said time out. K---- bite baby."
Later she said, "Sorry J-----," at her mom's prompting.
K---- is still singing, "For the sake of his sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and the whole world." (from the Divine Mercy chaplet on EWTN)

"K---- go down and eat breakfast."
She took my mother's copy of Magnificat down to breakfast and was looking at it.
"Popo Jesus." "Pope."
She was looking at pictures. "Who's this one?" My mom: "Angel."
My mom thinks she has a very active imagination.... who knows.

What a super new economy Americans have! US job growth has a distinctly third world flavor. A very small percentage of 2007's new jobs required a college education. Since there are so few jobs for university graduates, how is "education the answer"?
