While Drs. George and Lee are correct in pointing out that development is an internal activity of the conceptus, they do not offer a reason why what informs the conceptus must be a rational soul rather than an animal soul, which is later replaced by a rational soul. Given recents statements of the Magisterium proclaiming that human life is present at conception, one could argue that this position is a part of Sacred Tradition, but I wonder if this can be done, given the theological data. (This is, of course, assuming that "human" is being used in an univocal sense and not an analogical one.)
