What are the 'negative' effects of SSRIs?

Both Alexander Cockburn (in Prozac Madness) and Fred Gardner are asserting there is a link between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and suicidal ideation/violent behavior. Mr. Gardner's Prozac Madness. What is the scientific evidence for this? And are pharmaceutical companies (and their doctors) putting the public at risk by not disclosing the possible negative effects of their products?
