On patriotism and nationalism

Patriotism is a virtue of the will; St. Thomas Aquinas gives his definition of patriotism here, under piety. The fanatic form of nationalism, on the other hand, names both a habit of the mind, by which we wrongly believe our nation(-state) to be superior to all others in all ways, and the sort of habit of pride or chauvinism modifying the will which leads to such a belief.
