Is there more substance to Hazony than I had previously thought? Is his book worth getting now? Is he not controlled op as suspected? Insofar as he is opposed to ethnonationalism and still advocates for a form of identity that is based on culture or creed alone, his understanding of politike remains problematic.

If one cannot enforce universalism without imperialism, then to advocate universalism is to advocate imperialism, in this case Caesaropapism, the imperial structure that is the second millenium papacy. And the Russians should be rightly wary of that, even if the patriarch of Moscow may go too far in his pretensions.

Liberalism (and statism) can thus be understood as atheist offshoots of this Latin ecclesial imperialism striving to compete with secular imperialism.

Hagia Sophia will not be restored until the patriarch of Constatinople repents. while it may be necessaru for a council to recognize his renunciation of the status given to Constantinople, nothing prevents him from renouncing it and acting accordingly.

Autocephaly for national churches is an inadequate universal solution which respect to nation-states, as it will tend to reinforce and serve secular nationalism. A locus of churches in a city can be represented in council, but the Church should be moored primarily in a local political reality.
