To me though it is stumbling block for any conservative and Christian Postliberalism to continue to believe in capitalism (as opposed to the market). I continue to think that real conservatism, as Ruskin saw, requires a commitment to mutualist socialism in some guise.

I simply don’t understand why so many American Catholic intellectuals support American styles of conservatism, whether neo or paleo. Neither pure capitalist market nor nationalist economic self-interest are compatible with Papal teaching or the Gospel. Americanism trumps faith.

Being an Opinionated Academic Doesn't Make Him a Leader

or an expert on leadership or human societies or human nature. Apparently he's never done any research on the lack of matriarchal societies in human history, or if he has, forgot it or ignores it. It is male leadership which will reform the church, even if it is not all clerical. Generally academics are as isolated as clerics from any actual process of becoming properly qualified for leadership.

What they have exposed to view is that a weak church attracts a lot of weaker people trying to find a safe bolt-hole. This includes the huge presence of conservative gay cabals in denial amongst the clergy. Everyone knows this accounts for large parts of abuse and its concealment

You say "honour codes," I say natural law.

This female emancipation has of course exposed just how the sexual ancien regime in practice (not theory) assumed gender double standards. And how far in practice the laity combined theological with different honour codes and tacitly saw this combination as perfectly Christian.

A Christianization or blessing of brotherhood making ceremonies (which are to be found in many cultures) is not the same as a modern day same-sex civil union (or marriage).

And although Jonathan Boswell’s research was largely fantasy, more careful studies (eg The Friend, forget author) have shown certain pre-modern ecclesial recognitions of the special sanctity of certain friendships - albeit not seen as sexual.

There are certainly some (but all evil actions only bad as deficient) though I have say that I think seeing artificial contraception as one of them is plain bonkers. It was already accepted by several 19thC bishops and this ‘rigorism’ re-surfaced for weird reasons.
