Some more thoughts on RBSD/RBF
A conundrum.
I was going through some more websites on Monday to see what had been updated. iirc, Paul Vunak used to be associated with JKD and Dan Inosanto; after his time with Bruce Lee, Dan Inosanto had returned to his roots by learning Filipino martial arts, and Paul Vunak was a beneficiary of this. How good is he? In a time of relative peace, when hand-to-hand combat is rare, how do teachers or instructors prove their expertise? Sparring bound by rules and safety considerations is not a good way to make that sort of judgment, since survival does matter. (Which does not mean that disproportionate responses are permitted; how easily can a sparring contest escalate without rules?) Picking real fights or duelling, like Musashi Miyamoto, does not seem to be a morally acceptable way to test one's self, though.
A compromise might be full-contact fighting, with safety equipment. Tony Blauer who is markets full-body protective equipment. Using such equipment seems suitable for practicing specific techniques, or simulating certain conditions (e.g. operators wearing tactical gear and body armor), but wouldn't it hinder speed and reaction while practicing combat under other conditions (meeting an asailant while one is in a business suit or casual clothing, for instance)?

I'm surprised SCARS is still in business. Many of those who knew something about MA or reality-based fighting and bought SCARS products were vocal in their claim that the system was a fraud.

Under limited conditions one might be able to judge proficiency, but this would be proficiency in certain skills only, not in overall 'expertise'. For example, in wing chun there are the chi sao exercises. A wing chun master would be an expert in chi sao and the skills that it involves (sensitivity with the arms and hands, use of certain techniques, defending certain lines), but does being adept at chi sao mean one is a good fighter or able to counter someone who does not engage in close in-fighting as a rule? Can chi sao skills be applied against a grappler, or be used as a part of grappling? Similarly, knowledge of forms or principles/'philosophy' can be tested, but this is not enough to make a good fighter.
It seems to be easier to make judgments about one's proficiency with weapons, since dummy weapons (of the same weight as the real ones) can be employed.
I can understand why those who prefer RBSD have a "what gets results" or "what works" mentality, which is often ascribed to authentic JKD as well. How much of hand-to-hand combat can be 'scientific'? Or more accurately, can fighting skills be explained by certain fundamental principles? And are some principles better than others in attaining certain ends? For example, is it always important to protect one's centerline?

I still have to see traditional WC footwork in action... is it all that it is cracked up to be, regardless of the defense given by WC teachers? Is it practicable in all surfaces and terrains?

Part 2 of the season finale for House
Maybe I'm being too critical in my appraisal of the season finale of Torchwood. While I have seen death in the hospital, I have been fortunate enough not to witness anyone close to me die or to see what happens what someone is conscious and passing away. Perhaps my opinion of what is "realistic" would change if that were to happen. The accounts of saints dying, or of the dying people they have ministered to, have had an impact on me.
How many people would rather die in their sleep, or unconscious in a hospital bed, rather than confront it? Some do not wish to have a painful death due to some illness or disease--but if they do not believe, would not dying of old age or organ failure, with something to numb the pain of the body, still be painful? Or at least a cause of anxiety?
*spoiler warning*
The season finale of House also deals with the death of one of the minor characters. There is crying, exchanges of "I love you," a gathering of people around the bed to say "Good-bye," cuddling of the lovers. No chaplain though, no prayers. The attitude of the show's creators towards religion? While House is vocal about his rejection of religion, he does grapple with the transcendent from time to time. House himself is close to death, but recovers. Does he have a "genuine" real-death experience, or is it all in his imagination?
"Life shouldn't be random."
House does not believe that there is any ultimate meaning to be found in what transpires in the universe, but a part of him yearns for it. Would it be accurate to say that the question, "Why do the innocent suffer?" is at the back of his mind? And is one source of his atheism? Despite being a misanthrope who seems to revel in his misery, in the last 10 minutes of the episode he admits that he would rather not be miserable or in pain. (And I think he does see a distinction between the two.) If it's a genuine experience, does the show then acknowledge that there is an afterlife? And do only the good find peace? (And does A---- qualify?) Or is it available to everyone?
A good death is one where one does not die alone, but surrounded by loved ones. The same thing happened in Torchwood; although one of the characters who died was physically separated from the rest of the team, he was in contact with someone else via radio, so there a virtual presence. An acknowledgement that relationships and love have a power to comfort and sustain, something that other created goods do not have. But are warm feelings enough to overcome the anxiety of death?
What impact will A----'s death have on House next season. Will he regret and reform? Is there a hint of something finally happening between House and Cuddy?

The Ward Method
If I were to teach at the primary level, I would try to bring in someone to teach the Ward method to the students. I don't have any competence to teach the children how to sing, though I would encourage them. It would be much better than having them read social studies textbooks. The Ward method was employed at the seminary to teach beginners how to sing, and it was rather effective, even for those who were tone-deaf. Paulus had a good bass voice but didn't know how to sing before he came to the seminary; he was making very good progress in the class, but he left the seminary after the first year. Has he sung since? Haha. I would think that the Ward method is still used at OLGS.

I remember watching the first two Desperado movies on NBC--there was a pretty brunette in the first movie. Apparently 5 such movies were made? I don't know if they used the Carpenters cover for the movie, or a version sung by another woman. I also learned that Elmore Leonard was the creator of the character and screenplay for the first movie. (And only the first?)
Apparently Lise Cutter played the love interest, Nora Malloy, and she was a red-head in the movie. That's what I get for watching it on a B/W TV.
With respect to boxing, should we follow the Greeks or the Romans?

Though boxing flourished in ancient Greece, it was frowned upon by the Roman authorities, which held that it tended to degrade its audiences. There seems to have been little organised boxing during the Dark Ages and medieval times, but it underwent a revival in England from the mid-17th century, supported by the aristocracy who used it as a vehicle for gambling, although some evangelicals regarded it as base and corrupting.
