Many of the changes in family structure over the last generation have been driven by changes in the behavior of women. In the 1960’s, a group of Marxist women who called themselves feminists defined the meaning of these social trends, and pushed them in a very distinct direction—not only toward the equalization of gender roles and the economic independence of women, but also toward increased levels of divorce and the eventual dissolution of the marriage bond itself. Somewhere between the extremes of the total privatization and the total dissolution of marriage, women must find a way to integrate their gender-based roles and qualities with the difficult gifts of modern freedom. . . .
