What would the Romans think of "reality fighting," like the UFC?
Though boxing flourished in ancient Greece, it was frowned upon by the Roman authorities, which held that it tended to degrade its audiences. There seems to have been little organised boxing during the Dark Ages and medieval times, but it underwent a revival in England from the mid-17th century, supported by the aristocracy who used it as a vehicle for gambling, although some evangelicals regarded it as base and corrupting.
