So perhaps Americans want a black-and-white ending which answers all their questions? Is the disapproval an indicator of the average intelligence of the American TV watcher? Or do they have a valid gripe?
Personally, I think that having the gangster in these dramas suffer an explicit fall is the very bedrock of the genre. This ending sounds to be as untenable as a murder mystery in which the detective never finds out the truth.
That's the difference between honoring/subverting a genre and just spiting it. Keep in mind that even Chinatown honored the core tenet of detective fiction, in that the detective is able to find out the truth.
It is rather interesting, though, how crime fiction is the other side of the coin to detective fiction -- in both cases, we expect the natural order to be restored in some manner.
