Hrm... how about the Loyalist cause?

Mr. Daniel Larison recommends the following for a history of the American Loyalists:
The Good Americans: The Loyalists in the American Revolution by Wallace Brown

(He believes that "as a matter of constitutional law, the Loyalists were pretty much in the right.")

If it turns out that the Loyalists had a stronger case, does that have any implication on how we should judge the Southern case for secession? It may be that the South based their arguments on the Constitution and what it did not prohibit, while those who desired independence from Great Britain had a weaker case, since they were arguing against British constitutional law?
