The weak link in the cast is Zellweger, but the fault is not entirely hers. The story tries to make Allison a more complicated and enigmatic character than the female lead usually is in Westerns, but the end result is often confusing and sloppy. One simply never warms up to Allison, and the more she's drawn into the main plot the more bewildering and less appealing she becomes. You just never believe that Cole and Hitch will be torn apart over Allison, especially when Zellweger's makeup makes her look like she's walked into every shovel lying around the mining camp.Didn't we see that coming from a long way off? Still, I think I'll watch the movie... If part of the problem is with the original character, is that due to the adaptation or the original novel?
