Fr. Stravinskas seemed to be trying to stir up some trouble in the comments section for this post at NLM, but his first and second attempts at leaving a comment have been deleted. He used to be listed as a contributor to the blog, but I don't see his name anywhere now. He referred to the low Masses being celebrated (simultaneously) by the Franciscans of the Immaculate, instead of a single (conventual) Mass, and asked whether this should be the norm. His comments were deleted probably because they were pointless and off-topic, and provocative. While I agree that the ideal is a single conventual Mass (even if the question about Mass intentions and stipends seems to be unresolved), that thread was not the appropriate place to discuss it. The Orthodox, as far as I know, would be baffled by the Latin practice of having multiple low Masses, even though it is something traditionalists tend to accept as being "traditional" and praiseworthy. I don't know if this practice can be proscribed for monasteries and religious communities. I don't see how multiple Masses at your typical parish could be reduced to one. And there aren't enough priests to make the division of parishes into smaller communities possible.

American Papist: Legion of Christ to expand into U.S. Catholic higher education?
So the LCs may be making a deal to become a integral part of (or acquire?) Southern Catholic College? What is their brand of a liberal education? I looked quickly at SCC's curriculum -- it seems very similar to that of Christendom, or any other small Catholic liberal arts college. I have heard that the LCs here in the U.S. are receptive towards Aristotelian-Thomism; how is their theologate (at Thornwood?)? Apparently the LCs are operating "as normal," even while the order is being reviewed.

Susan Boyle, unlike many of the singers on any of the Idol shows (particularly American Idol), is far from being a mediocre singer. There is an undercurrent of self-worship in the aptly-named American Idol and its British knockoff, which lifted Boyle to stardom.Actually, Miss Boyle was on Britain's Got Talent, not The X-Factor (or its predecessor Pop Idol). Certainly there is much to be criticized in the entertainment industry of both countries, and the mass media. But this sort of guilt by association fallacy should not stand. Perhaps Mr. Goldman is himself unable to recognize singing talent. Grumpier than the staff at Chronicles, to the point of being insensible? Who would have believed it possible.

Robert Baer's most recent book
I have not really been paying attention to what he's been up to for a while, so I just learned that he had recently published another book late last year: The Devil We Know. Those who are ignorant of Iran (and especially of the limited role of the president, in comparison with the Supreme Ayatollah, who controls the military) should probably read the book, instead of getting bad information from Faux News, "right-wing" radio, and (neo-)conservative pundits.

I watched part of it on KGO Plus Friday afternoon. Some notes: Baer supports UN Security Council Resolution 242, and believes that this is the solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. He also acknowledges the reality of peak oil, but thinks we should be looking at alternative fuels (instead of simplifying). A choice quote: "We're really bad at empire."

What it comes down to, apparently, is a leadership elite across all sectors -- politics, business, academia, media -- that is incapable of processing the truth, and then conveying it to the broad American public. Alas, this also appears to be a common theme in history, with a commonly tragic outcome, which is that elites get ruthlessly dumped and replaced by new elites, often composed of zealots, maniacs, nincompoops, and others generally ill-disposed to the able management of complex affairs. It's called the "circulation of elites," and in times of crisis it tends to take on a kind of downward spiraling flavor, with each gang of discredited leaders tossed out for a progressively worse one until a kind of exhaustion is reached -- whereupon the archetypal man-on-a-white-horse arrives on the scene.

Only a few things need to be done. Teachers need to be given back the power to use corporal punishment. We should leave the European Convention on Human Rights and other treaties which prevent the operation of commonsense British laws.
The school-leaving age should be reduced to 15. Secondary schools should be divided between the vocational and the academic, with selection on merit. The law permitting ‘no-win, no-fee’ lawsuits should be repealed. So should the Children Act 1989 and the other social workers’ charters which have robbed sensible adults of authority for two decades.
Then we should embark on a Restoration Of The Married Family Act, which would end the many-headed attack on stable married families and restore the lost position of fathers in the home, one of the major causes of bad behaviour by boys.

In every economic crisis, two sets of explanations—and solutions—are proposed. Republican “conservatives” (who used to be known as liberals) say that rogues in and out of government have distorted the market and robbed the nation, while Democratic “liberals” (who are basically Marxists) blame the Republican conservatives (who are really liberals) for refusing to regulate the marketplace, by which they mean the state should control and probably own the major industries and business sectors. For the liberals who are really Marxists, the answer is a second FDR—more regulation and a Newer Deal—while, for the conservatives who are really liberals, the solution is a second Reagan (lower taxes and deregulation). Unfortunately, too few of them are willing to balance tax cuts with budget cuts, without which our children and our children’s children will be crippled by the debts run up by the Bush and Obama administrations.
The debate, in other words, is the same debate Americans have been having for nearly 150 years, an acrimonious dialogue between two sets of radicals: on the one hand, the philosophes and classical liberals who undermined society in the 18th and 19th centuries; on the other, the Marxists who used government to fill the void left by the liberal demolition of the traditional social institutions of family, class, and religion. Anyone who stands outside of the charmed circle of the Revolution is excluded from the conversation.
If we could dig up some old reactionary or prerevolutionary—a Samuel Johnson, or Walter Scott, or even, reaching back still further, a Cicero—what would such a man, supposing he had a comprehensive knowledge of what we have done in the past two centuries, say to us?
The Julian and Gregorian calendars are very close this year, with respect to Easter.
