"They were not immigrants but colonists."

This was a point made forcefully by someone fairly recently about those who originally settled in the 13th colonies, as they were not seeking to join the existing native communities but to create new ones separate from them. I can't remember where I read this. David Yeagley makes the same argument in Not a Nation of Immigrants.
