FPJ: The Treasonous Clerk: Reviving the Culture Wars, Again
James Matthew Wilson - 08/04/08
In a remarkably facile bit of reporting, Patricia Cohen, writing recently in The New York Times claims that the young faculty slowly replacing Baby Boomers in the contemporary university are creatures of a decidedly more “moderate” political stamp. Yet she makes only the most modest efforts to verify or explain the meaning of such an observation. In fact, while younger faculty are less likely to define themselves as political activists, this is a sign more clearly of the complacent acceptance by young faculty of leftist ideas coupled with an increased specialization and careerism within the academy than of a true return to the loving pursuit of knowledge and the appreciation of the contemplative life.
