What's next, you might ask? It depends. Most of these signatories likely are not really revolutionaries or even serious secessionists. But they are frustrated and rightly concerned about the future. They know, instinctively and viscerally, that the America they once knew or the one they hoped to see is no longer there. It has been hi-jacked by those who care nothing for its past or its foundations. They see a bleak future for themselves and their progeny.

What else can be done at this point, but to gather strength and solidify personal networks.

Nationalist (or Yankee) Catholics have been poo-pooing the petitions (ignorant of the problem of scale that affects their application of CST to the federal union). I don't see much point in engaging them. I think all their talk about reforming the Republican Party or the Federal Government (through some sort of movement or party politics) will come to naught. The petitions will be discussed tomorrow on Chronicles Unbound.

Bradford on Kirk

I most recently mentioned Russell Kirk and his books about the origins of the American political order in this post. The Imaginative Conservative posts something by Mel Bradford that is relevant: A Proper Patrimony: Russell Kirk and America's Moral Genealogy, in which Bradford discusses Kirk's The Roots of American Order. Not that Obama or most Democrats care. Who can revitalize the Southern Democrats?

Conservative Heritage Times posts a letter by Dr. Michael Hill of the League of the South: The Poison of Multiculturalism. I was somewhat puzzled by his exclusive focus on white Americans, since I thought the LOS was open to black Southrons and was dedicated to defending traditional Southern culture as the common inheritance of Southern whites and blacks. (See the outreach from the Arkansas LOS.) The focus on whites is understandable in so far as Anglo-American culture was first the culture of white men, and multiculturalism seeks to eradicate its pre-eminence and simultaneously make white men almost personae non gratae in their own country. In the LOS FAQ it is stated:

Q:Why does the LS seek to protect the Anglo-Celtic core population and culture of the historic South? 

A: The Anglo-Celtic peoples settled the South and gave it its dominate culture and civilisation. We believe that the advancement of Anglo-Celtic culture and civilisation is vital in order to preserve our region as we know it. Should this core be destroyed or displaced the South would be made over in an alien image — unfamiliar and inhospitable to our children and grandchildren. We, as Anglo-Celtic Southerners, have a duty to protect that which our ancestors bequeathed to us. If we do not promote our interests then no one will do it for us.

But should the letter be taken as signalling a shift in direction for the organization? Or is it just a protest against the attacks by radicals upon white America?

As a result of the elite animosity towards average, middle American whites, it is acceptable to make "comedies" like The Watch and The Campaign, in which white men are mocked. Yes, there is a minority member in The Watch, but he seems to be more socially inept than anything, while Vince Vaughn's character is an obnoxious jerk and Jonah Hill's characters is a loser. (That's how they seem from the trailer, at least.) The four do become accidental heroes, but that doesn't make the set-up any less offensive.

It's not surprising that the Ben Affleck movie, Argo, features mostly white faces as the story takes place during the '70s. Does the movie reflect a nostalgic love of the '70s in Hollywood? '70s chic? The '80s are tainted by Reagan and the rise of the yuppies.

Perhaps the most interesting chapter in Why America Failed is the one on the American South. Berman argues that, notwithstanding the slavery and racism (which he abhors) that existed there, the Antebellum South with its agricultural economy and its traditional culture provided the only alternative to the dominant high-speed, high-stress, high-tech, imperialistic, industrial culture found elsewhere in the United States. Before the Civil War, the Rural South represented a communitarian alternative to the dehumanized, mass-production, mass-consumption, narcissistic lifestyle that was beginning to permeate most of the rest of America – an alternative to the politics of money, power, speed, greed, and progress. The Antebellum South discovered the joys of simple living long before simple living came back in vogue in the 1990s.


The real tragedy of the Civil War was that it was not possible to find an alternative way to end the scourge of slavery which did not result in the deaths of 625,000 individuals. It was a classic case of throwing out the baby (traditional culture) with the bath water (slavery). What was at stake in the Civil War was nothing less than the clash of two radically different civilizations according to Berman.


Throughout its history America has tried to “fix” traditional societies which it perceived to be obstacles to progress.


What the North did to the South is really the model of what America in general did and does to “backward” (i.e., traditional) societies, if it can. You wipe out almost the entire indigenous population of North America; you steal half of Mexico; you literally vaporize a large chunk of the Japanese population; you bomb Vietnam “back to the Stone Age” (in the words of Curtis LeMay); you “shock and awe” Iraqi civilians, and so on.


Berman’s chapter on the South is the most insightful piece I have ever read about the region where I spent over a half century of my life. It reads like a tragic Southern novel entitled What Might Have Been, But Could Never Be.

Is his assessment of the early settlers too negative?

According to Berman the seeds of the Empire’s destruction were sewn in the sixteenth century by the early European settlers who were, above all, into “hustling” – looking out for number one. Ever since then, “hustling, materialism, and the pursuit of personal gain without regard for its effects on others” have provided the dominant theme of the American culture. He or she who dies with the most toys wins the game. Enough never seems to be quite enough.

One should look to the moral choices (and culture) as the causes of decline, but perhaps there is an inevitability to it once the polity gets off track, so that even good people are stuck making choices that are not so good?

If they were being squeezed in the motherland by those with power, one can understand why they would go somewhere else (rather than seeking to replace the government).

America is only a geographical expression. Metternich's joke was made originally at the expense of Italy, but there are all too many modern states that have tried to build artificial national identities out of the ruins of historic and traditional regions -- the provinces, the sticks, the boondocks, the places where real people live, write poetry and pay their taxes.

In this respect, American Southerners have much in common with the Scots and the Welsh in Britain, the Lombards and Sicilians in Italy and the Ukrainians in the defunct Soviet Union. All have made enormous economic, military and cultural contributions to their imperial rulers, who rewarded their loyalty with exploitation and contempt.

In the United States, where ethnic slurs are punishable as hate crimes, it is still socially acceptable to describe Southerners as "rednecks" and "crackers," even though Southerners have, in fact, contributed to American culture, high and low, to a degree vastly out of proportion to their numbers.

What would American literature be without Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, William Faulkner, Walker Percy and Eudora Welty? What sort of political system would our ancestors have given us, if George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison had decided to remain British? What kind of popular music could we listen to, if white "crackers" like Hank Williams and Merle Haggard and Southern blacks like Louis Armstrong and Ray Charles had been content with the bland commercial music churned out by Tin Pan Alley? The mind of the South remains distinctive, even today, if only for the tenacity with which its people hold onto their religious faith.

Until recent years, it looked as if the progress of history had condemned all the little nations to the ash heap of history. But the end of the Cold War and the breakup of the Soviet Union and of Yugoslavia have inspired regional and ethnic movements all over Europe. Some of them are threatening secession; others have been content to demand home rule and a right to assert their culture and language.

Here in the United States, a new group of Southerners is calling for nothing more revolutionary than home rule for the states established by the U.S. Constitution. The Southern League was founded in 1994 at a meeting of scholars, journalists and political activists in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Our members are pledged to seek the well-being and independence of the Southern people by every honorable means. Far from wishing any ill to the rest of the nation, we believe that a renewed South will be an inspiration to other regions in search of their own identities and to all Americans who wish to lead their lives in peace.

A concern for states' rights, local self-government and regional identity used to be taken for granted everywhere in America. But the United States is no longer, as it once was, a federal union of diverse states and regions. National uniformity is being imposed by the political class that runs Washington, the economic class that owns Wall Street and the cultural class in charge of Hollywood and the Ivy League.

The easiest way to secure home rule for Southern states is to restore the federal constitution. What had been a genuinely federal union has been turned into a multicultural, continental empire, ruled from Washington by federal agencies and under the thumb of the federal judiciary. And all this is done regardless of the party or ideology that controls the White House. If the liberal Democrats have saddled us with affirmative action, conservative Republicans are busily "federalizing" crimes that used to be within the purview of states and local communities.

We believe it is time for the people of the Southern states to take control of their own governments, their own institutions, their own culture, their own communities and their own lives. On the national political level, this will mean sending men and women to Congress who will insist upon a strict construction of the Constitution and a restoration of the 10th Amendment that explicitly reserves all unenumerated powers to the states and to the people.

On the state level, self-government should be restored to the towns and communities that make up the states. This means an end, not only to federal interference, but to state interference in local government and local schools. Under federal and state mandates, American schools have become the joke of the civilised world, and in the guise of helping black children, we have destroyed educational opportunities for children of all races. It is time to give the schools back to the parents.

Local control over local schools is not a recipe for resegregation. Involuntary desegregation, forced busing and court-ordered redistricting have succeeded only in lowering the standards of education, precipitating "white flight" and de facto segregation and exacerbating racial tensions. As black novelist Zora Neale Hurston observed in 1954, the premise of Brown v. Board of Education -- that all-black schools were inherently inferior -- was an insult to black Americans. Brown, as Hurston predicted, set the stage for "government by fiat." If neighbors, black and white, cannot work out their problems among themselves, then no government can do it for them.

On a personal level it is time for Southerners to wean themselves from dependence on federal largesse. Since the New Deal, Washington has funneled more tax dollars into the South than it has taken out, and this has caused the region to be bound tightly by the attached strings. If Southerners are ever to be free from federal dictates, we must learn to provide for our own needs without depending on government wealth transfers.

On a spiritual level, we take our stand squarely within the tradition of Christianity. This historic faith, though everywhere attacked by the hollow men of modernity, has always been central to the pursuit of personal honor, political liberty and human charity. Asking for only the religious freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, we oppose the government's campaign against our Christian traditions.

The war that is being waged against the Southern identity and its traditional symbols must cease. Legislatures in Southern states are under pressure to rename streets and destroy monuments that honor Confederate soldiers. Corporations headquartered in Southern states have refused to fly state flags that contain a Confederate emblem; public schools have forbidden the display of the Confederate battle flag as if it were an example of gang colors.

If the Confederate flags are tainted by the abuses of slavery, so are the flags of the United States, Great Britain, France and Spain -- all countries that engaged in the trading of human beings. We do not claim that all our ancestors were infallible or even honorable in all their actions, but we utterly repudiate the one-sided and hypocritical movement to demonize Southerners and their symbols.

Race relations are nowhere perfect in the United States, but black and white Southerners have learned through experience, often painful, how to get along with, or at least tolerate, each other. Southerners on both sides who were "racist" by principle were decent and humane in their actual conduct. As Dick Gregory used to say, "Down South they don't care how close you get, so long as you don't get too big; up North they don't care how big you get, so long as you don't get too close." This regional difference in attitude may help to explain why so many decent black American families are moving back to the South.

After so many decades of strife, black and white Southerners of good will should be left alone to work out their destinies, avoiding, before it is too late, the urban hell that has been created by the lawyers, social engineers and imperial bureaucrats who have grown rich on programs that have done nothing to help anyone but themselves.

The same Northern intellectuals, who in the 19th century were denouncing Southern "racism," greeted the arrival of Catholics and Jews with horror. They designed public school programs to Protestantise the Irish and practised the same kinds of genteel and not-so-genteel discrimination against blacks. Southern history tells a different story. Both Jews and Catholics quickly made their way into the highest political and social circles. In fact, the first Catholic and the first Jew to sit in an American cabinet were picked by Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy. Southerners have been remarkably free of the anti-immigrant prejudices that have characterised Northern politics since the 1840s.

Southerners respect the rights of all Americans in every region to preserve their authentic cultural traditions and demand the same respect from others. For too long, Northern intellectuals have tried to control Southern culture and to northernise our schools and universities. They and their Southern allies have rewritten history and imposed their mythology upon generations of students, who have come to believe that their ancestors were uniquely guilty in the annals of inhumanity, that their region is -- in the graphic phrase of one brainwashed Southerner -- "the nation's armpit." This is not scholarship but propaganda.

If Southerners were any other people in the world, the campaign to rob them of their symbols, their history and their cultural identity would be termed cultural genocide -- a term that several scholars have not hesitated to apply. The late Raphael Lemkin, the Polish legal scholar who helped give the term its currency, defined "genocide" not merely as an attempt to annihilate a people physically but as a plan for "the disintegration of the political and social institutions of culture, language, national feelings, religion." If Southerners are a blight on the American landscape, as they are almost uniformly portrayed, then the only "solution" is to eliminate them by destroying their cultural identity.

As Southerners, we prefer not to think of ourselves as victims. We are proud, not of what our people have suffered (although they have suffered a good deal), but of the good things they have done. We are not asking for reparations or set-aside programs. All we ask are the rights the Constitution gave us and all Americans over 200 years ago: the right to be let alone to mind our own business, to raise our own children and to say our own prayers in the buildings built with our own money. As one of Faulkner's characters remarks, "That don't seem like too much to ask."

Secessionists, others seek freedom from burdens of big government

Readers unfamiliar with the actual goals of either Christian Exodus or the League of the South would judge both groups not only malevolent, but hopelessly out of touch with today's issues, and unable to propose serious, workable solutions to them -- that is, if their only information about them came from Kay McSpadden's June 16 column, "Conservative fringe targets South Carolina."

In fact, the emergence of local sovereignty movements is the defining political effort of the 21st century.

The 19th and 20th centuries were characterized by authoritarian, centralizing regimes that bound peoples together against their will in the name of a one-size-fits-all ideology. The new century is witnessing the growth of secession and autonomy movements around the world -- a clear signal that the age of ideological megastates is fast coming to a close, and that culture-based, human-scaled nation-states are replacing them.

The truth is that big government is inherently ambitious, wasteful and murderous. The age of the all-controlling central authority has passed, and smaller, human-scaled governments are taking its place. Independence and autonomous movements are active in Canada, Italy, Spain, Britain, and have redrawn the map throughout Eastern Europe and Asia. Here at home, such movements are just stirring to action as people rediscover the true American principle of the right of self-determination.

Eight states and over 400 local governments have nullified the unconstitutional USA-PATRIOT Act. Others are refusing to enforce the Orwellian REAL-ID act. Governments such as the State of Oklahoma have taken direct action to stop the flow of illegal aliens, a duty the federal government has refused to uphold. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and then-Prime Minister Tony Blair recently signed an agreement to form a new trans-Atlantic market in carbon dioxide emissions to fight global warming. Others have followed suit -- New England, for example, has signed on to the Kyoto Accords, despite opposition from D.C.

These developments reveal growing disgust with an unresponsive, hostile central government. New movements, such as the Second Vermont Republic, illustrate the increasing awareness that a new direction must be found, that an escape route must be found away from the imperial death spiral of more surveillance, more taxation, more domestic and global intervention.

The growing interest in reclaiming the powers delegated to the federal government is purely American in spirit, and in law, as the Declaration of Independence boldly proclaimed. What would the Founders think of a central government that consumes over a third of our incomes, that's actively importing a Third-World majority, that claims it can redefine any American as an "enemy combatant" who does not possess his birthright of habeas corpus?

What would the Founders say about a government that not only goes abroad in search of monsters, but even invents them when none can be found, to keep the military-industrial-congressional money-and-power machine grinding away? What would they say about a government that ignores its people's express desire to seal our porous borders, and put an end to a counter-productive, immoral war in Iraq?

There's a better way. Rather than seeking "a return to antebellum life," as your op-ed writer claimed, groups such as Christian Exodus, the League of the South and the Second Vermont Republic are seeking an alternative to an alien, remote central government that ignores its citizens. We act not out of nostalgia or ill-will toward anyone, but out of necessity.

The elderly, infirm, and disabled are subject to forced starvation and involuntary euthanasia.
Citizens are subjected to the perils of imperialist entanglements abroad, and left unprotected from alien invaders at home.

We are violated in our right to Liberty:

Abortion continues against the wishes of many States and in violation of the reserved powers of the States under the 10th Amendment.
Christians are denied their rights to free speech, freedom of the press, the display of religious monuments, and other expressions of faith in the public sphere.
Citizens are denied their rights to keep and bear arms sufficient for the restraint of tyranny.
Men, women, and children are involuntarily exposed to the corrupting influences of homosexuality, pornography, and other perversities protected and financed by the national government.
Sodomy is now legal and celebrated as "diversity" by order of the U.S. Supreme Court rather than condemned as perversion. Another usurpation of the rights of the States by the federal government.
Families are subject to the trauma of no-fault divorce, often used to unjustly deny fathers equal protection under law and fundamental family rights.
Children are seized from good parents arbitrarily and under false pretexts, and placed in the care of the state, as driven by federal funding.

Attempts at reform have proven futile for over three decades, and do not hold promise at the national level since Republicans and Democrats alike have abandoned regard for the Constitution and the proper role of government. League of the South

Drs. Fleming and Wilson helped to start the League of the South. There's even a California chapter. It is the target of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which ALSO calls Pat Buchanan a racist and has recently judged certain traditionalist Catholics as being anti-semitic. (The response of Tradition in Action.)

Can you count the fallacies in the piece on Mr. Buchanan? Plenty of ad hominens and guilt by association fallacies. The SPLC noted that Dr. Fleming and Dr. Grady McWhiney were no longer listed on the board of directors. Does this mean they no longer support the organization? The League of the South is labelled a Confederate hate group, though there is nothing on the offical website that shows it supports racism. One could argue that this has to be hidden and cannot be advertised to the public. But if that is the case, what is the evidence? Perhaps there are some who are affiliated with the League who are racists, but given that the mission of the League is to foster and protect Southern identity and culture, should it be surprising that among its members there are some who link this to bigotry?

As for having a strict policy on immigration--accusing people of racism because they do not see assimilation taking place and they wish to preserve their own culture is a rather dumb judgment to make, one that doesn't pay sufficient attention to the argument. Then again, when one is gripped by universalist principles, it's not surprising that they see those who support the particular and the local as being bigoted.
