"Outwit, Outlast, Outplay" as applied to ecclesiological reality? Or "ecclesial Darwinism," survival of the "conservative" or "orthodox." For a while it has been observed that "liberal" orders and priests have been fading away with time. The strategy of containing the damage done by priests who won'tn be fired while reforming the seminary and seeking orthodox men to become priests - how many bishops have been pursuing this strategy rather one of confrontation, correction and removal, if necessary? The quality of vocations in Boston has not changed dramatically under Cardinal O'Malley, as far as I know - his predecessor and his rectors managed to keep St. John's in decent shape. The clerical scandal may have weakened the reputation of the local Church; but what about poor leadership/pastoring? How many souls has that impacted?

What has the archbishop of Boston done to correct wayward theologians (Jesuits and their associates) at Boston College? I do not think he has cleaned house since I left Boston. How many heterodox priests remain in good standing with the diocese? Maybe I'm missing the "prudential reasoning."

May God preserve us from spineless bishops.

Perhaps the author of the op-ed piece has different priorities: "He was unofficially but universally recognized as Hispanic, and it didn’t hurt that he had obtained a doctorate in Spanish and Portuguese literature at Catholic University. Those of us who were educated there were often flabbergasted when he outperformed us in Spanish fluency."

There's a short interview with Tim Van Damm of Magdalen College on Life on the Rock. The archived video will be available until the next episode. The audio for Episode 675 can be found here. Mr. Van Damm discusses the liberal arts program offered at Magdalen -- it uses a Great Books program but modified by Dr. George Harne. There's a new musician in residence at the college, but no info at the website yet. There's also the Sacred Heart House (in Boston) for men. (For vocation discernment?) It's associated with St. Clement Eucharistic Shrine.
