It has not escaped my notice that St. Marys is the kind of place that could be fairly identified as a Benedict Option community. To be sure, I have never, ever claimed, nor would I ever claim, that you can escape sin. Still, even though I’m no longer Catholic, I do find it particularly painful that this is going on within a community that really is trying to live by traditional standards. It doesn’t negate their aspirations to holiness, including communal holiness, but it does make it harder for people to trust the leadership.

It may be a cult, but I have doubts as to whether it is a community. A community polices itself and its leadership justly and effectively.

Church Militant Still Gunning for the FSSPX

Dr. John Lamont appears to be one of those few Latin traditionalists who are willing to question whether everything should be continued or passed on as tradition. SSPX and Infiltration of Sex Abusers:

The editor of a respected French Catholic journal told me once that Abp. Lefebvre made the mistake of choosing quantity over quality when he set up the Society. This is true, but itself requires explanation.

The starting point for this explanation is that Abp. Lefebvre never seems to have done a postmortem on the preconciliar Church. He did not identify the weaknesses that caused it to collapse so quickly and thoroughly. He seems just to have thought that the preconciliar systems of training and theology were good ones that had been wrongly abandoned because of weakness, folly or treachery among the ecclesiastical leadership, and that what was needed was for them to be restored. Indeed he thought that they would be restored within a reasonable timeframe and that the postconciliar changes and problems would not be a lasting condition.

He also seems to have overestimated the number of Catholics who thought as he did on religious subjects out of mature understanding and conviction and to have been willing to take at face value the men who came asking to join his Society. It is as if he considered such men to be like seminarians in the 1920s, when the population of Catholics who were committed to the systems and beliefs of the preconciliar Church were much larger, the opportunities and status on offer for seminarians of this sort were far greater and the backing of ecclesiastical authority for these systems and beliefs was solid.

He did not see that in his own totally different situation, the motivations and character of the men who came forward to join his enterprise would have to be radically different from those of the seminarians of the 1920s, and that their professions of faith and commitment would often spring from motives and personality traits that did not appear on the surface and that were less than ideal.

Nor did he take into account the implications of the fact that the preconciliar system of priestly training was built on the inculcation of blind obedience and conformity. It is one thing to have such a system for training leaders in an important, powerful organization that is a dominant force in many countries. In that sort of situation, you can still attract serious, capable people who are willing to put up with the training and will survive it somewhat intact. There is also a corrective to the effects of this training, resulting from the fact that the senior leaders eventually have to discharge important responsibilities.

The pressure of these responsibilities does at some point select for men with character and initiative. The situation of a small, marginalized, despised community where leaders are trained and selected for blind obedience and conformity is very different. Sociologically, this kind of community has the characteristics of a cult. In consequence, the men who come forward as seminarians for a Catholic community of this kind will often be ones who want to be leaders in a cult. Richard Williamson, whom Lefebvre ordained as a bishop, is a clear example of this phenomenon, but there will have been many others.

There were problems with the institutional practices and culture within the patriarchate of Rome. What Latin can deny this?

Has it been deleted? Google Cache still has a copy of the two statements, and the second was apparently copied by Google on April 22 even though CM has it dated for April 25. April 22 is also the date the Church Militant story was published. CM tagged articles on the SSPX.

Steve Skojec's video on the CM article doesn't have anything substantive to say about the Church Militant story itself; he merely criticizes CM for undermining its own credibility with its "editorializing" and "bias," while agreeing that there should be an investigation done if necessary in order to ensure that justice is done. He has an article on 1P5 to explain his perspective further, and responses in the combox to the CM story has been mixed.



Whether those within Roman Catholic mass media should examine themselves for some form of Latin triumphalism, even if it finds refuge in a "remnant mentality"...

Whatever some Latins may think, there is more to the Church Universal than the patriarchate of Rome, and even if other jurisdictions are not free from problems, arguably the institutional problems besetting the patriarchate of Rome, exacerbated by Latin theological opinions about the office of the pope, are arguably more severe.

Given their notions of authority and hierarchy, will they do anything other than appeal to the SSPX leadership in Switzerland? And what if those leaders fail? Why would one expect the SSPX to not have inherited the problems of Latin ecclesial culture? Let's stop being naive here. So here, Dreher is being too optimistic with one of his closing lines: "A society built on lies and cover-ups deserves to fall, so it can rebuild on the foundation of truth." The truth is not enough.

Do they overestimate the impact? Given the order's own rocky relations with Rome, I don't think their promotion of Rome as a solution (or Latin ecclesiology) would sound sincere.

How much of a Latin traditionalist does one need to be in order to be good enough for whomever wrote this statement for the SSPX? And why would the SSPX leadership approve of such a statement? Why don't they come out and say what is missing from the FSSP's grasp of "Tradition"?

St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Virignia

Who is the architecture responsible for the final design of the SSPX American seminary? (Cram and Ferguson had been commissioned but the firm resigned from the commission and I can't find any information on who took over subsequently.) It looks very similar to the design for Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary, as both are Romanesque. Curious that neither order went with a Gothic design -- a more classical look for the United States? How is the St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary assimilating to the locals?

Pope Francis mentions the contrast between (divine) justice or righteousness and (divine) mercy, and an opposition between law and mercy (or love) that may not be necessary, if one has a different definition of righteousness, by which it is a synonym for God's love, then this opposition between justice and mercy disappears... Is Pope Francis trying to formulate some some sort of Latin version of oikonomia? Is this his pastoral program? Does he think that ecclesiastical law constricts, not simply that he should not "judge" people harshly but make available to them God's mercy by relaxing ecclesiastical discipline as much as possible? (A reappearance of the debates probalism and casuistry?)

But charity is the highest law of the Church, binding not only on bishops but on all of the Christian people. Charity cannot respond to obstinance in sin improperly -- this is not a matter of "justice" as if it were merely a human law, but of giving the appropriate response in accordance with a divine standard.
