As for the "icon"... too realistic. A miss.

Why can't we have a thriller about the female high school teacher who stalks one of her students?

(via AICN)

Indoctrination

And an approved story for the Common Core, no doubt. Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman, published in the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill anthology for 3rd grade, California Treasures.

The story is of a little black girl who likes to act the stories she hears but is dismayed when her classmates tell her she can't be Peter Pan because she is black and a girl. Of course her mother and her Nana encourage her, telling her she can do anything she puts her mind to. The lesson for the students? girls can do anything boys can. What feminist tripe.

Note the author's last name - a believer in the old-time religion or in secularism?

Maybe she isn't PC enough? Why should the black girl be such a lover of the stories written by whites for whites? Peter Pan? Shouldn't she instead be a mulicult SJW, fighting for the staging of an African play at school instead?

The character's nana is from Trinidad - maybe their family has a greater desire to assimilate to "white" culture than urban African-Americans.
