Syro-Malankara Prelate's Election Confirmed
KERALA, India, FEB. 11, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Archbishop Isaac Cleemis Thottunkal of Tiruvalla has been elected major archbishop of the Catholic Syro-Malankara Church.
The 47-year-old was elected by the Syro-Malankara bishops' synod which met Feb. 7-10 in Trivandrum, Kerala.
Benedict XVI confirmed the selection, the Vatican press office reported Saturday.
The new major archbishop will be installed March 3.
The Archdiocese of Trivandrum was vacant due to the death of Archbishop Cyril Baselios on Jan. 18.
Isaac Cleemis was born in 1959, and ordained a priest in 1986. He was ordained bishop in 2001 and made archbishop in 2006.
Three Catholic-rite Churches are present in Kerala: the Latin, Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara.
