I learned of Major Winters through the Band of Brothers miniseries, which is based on the book of the same name written by Stephen Ambrose. He is a quiet American, the ideal representative of "the Greatest Generation," and even if not all American soldiers lived up to the name "the Greatest Generation," I believe Major Winters did. He is a true leader of men, concerned with their welfare, and a good soldier, though not as well known as some of our other American military heroes. He was nominated for a Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on D-Day--leading his men to take out a German gun battery (depicted in episode 2 of Band of Brothers).
After the war, he was able to find the quiet life that he was looking for, on a small farm and Pennsylvania. (He was also a businessman.) An example of American Romanitas.
