Do the American bishops recognize any limits to immigration? What if it were proposed that illegal immigrants could stay, provided that they assimilate and that citizenship were withheld from them for at least 25 years, until it could be determined that they had assimilated, and that there would be a moratorium on all legal immigration until these former illegal immigrants had been absorbed. Would they agree to this?
"Our nation needs a program that would allow needed workers to enter the country legally. This program must include protection of worker rights."
What of justice for American workers? And when those who control the political economy seeks to exploit cheap labor (and seek compliant voters), can we really say that workers are needed from other countries, when there are many who are currently seeking work?

I expect not and neither would. I do think the Bishops would and do see there are linits to immigration
But like me I am not sure why Aliens would have to to wait 25 years( where do we get number) or the would have to be a stop to all legal immigration) While the Tanton groups would like this I am not sure why the Bishops would have to agree( or in fact anybody) to a agenda that is often rooted in a radical enviromental agenda
Now as to assimilation many o these people are at diffennt levels of assimilation. It is not like they just arrived yesterday. The children of illegals that were brought here might be assimilated already
Further I am not sure how denying the benefits and security of Citizenship for 25 years helps assimilation at all. In fact it seems to close off to a certain degree avenues of assimilation
25 numbers was a number I just threw out there while thinking. It could be longer, it could be shorter. If we use the wiki article as an accurate source, if there are 400,000 legal immigrants coming to the US each year and there are currently 11 million illegal immigrants in the US, then that's 27.5 years' supply of immigrants.
(This number of 11 million does not include the number of illegal immigrants anticipted to come in future years.)
Just because some people with a "radical environmental agenda" may support immoral means to limiting population does not mean that their concerns about the environment and sustainability are not grounded in reality.
The proposal regarding citizenship would only work if there was serious reconsideration of what citizenship is and on what basis it should be given. Too many Americans are democrats (unlike the Founding Fathers) and believers in "fairness" so they probably would not be willing to withhold it except for serious reasons.
If the states are to have sovereignty worth of the name, they will have to re-examine their ideals of citizenship. They would also be in a better position than the Federal Government to determine who has completely assimilated and who should be given citizenship.
Perhaps the American bishops are also committed democrats, but there is nothing in Tradition that requires this, and it is arguably counter to Tradition.
