It turns out that they are very dear old friends. I don't think he fiddles but reportedly can jig!
I am the administrative assistant at the Imago Dei Institute and I can wholeheartedly confirm that IDP is the most genuinely Catholic approach to psychotherapy currently in existence. Fr. Chad Ripperger, FSSP (a pioneer in Catholic psychology) has referred many people to Dr. Dilsaver as do his current pastors at the local Fraternity parish.
The primary difference between IDP and various other "Catholic" psychologies is the approach to suffering and the purpose of human life. Even in those organizations that do not countenance grave sin, the accepted purpose of psychotherapy is (usually) to make someone (1) feel better so they can (2) function in society. Sometimes they are aware that sin contains its own punishment and they advise therapants to cease sin to achieve these goals of alleviating suffering and functioning socially. The IDP approach, however, has a different goal. Dr. Dilsaver defines mental health as "the ability to receive, perceive, reflect upon, and act upon the real." This is because the specific difference of man is his rational nature so his specific health will be measured by how his reason relates to truth and subordinates his will thereto. As a consequence of this definition of mental health, and IDP therapist promotes a realistic and manly acceptance of the suffering that comes from living as a sinner in a fallen world rather than the comfort of empty affirmations and self-complacent opiates
I could go on, and perhaps I will if people are interested. But in summation, yes! IDP is THE Catholic psychological conceptualization. Accept no substitutes!
