Korean cosmetics brand Isa Knox has unveiled the story to its much-anticipated commercial starring Lee Hyo-lee and Jessica Alba. The ad for the company's Double Effect Advanced Serum emphasizes the two starlets' sex appeal and embraces their unique charms. Beneath the headline, "A woman's face is lies", a tearful Lee breaks up with a man while a smiling Alba does the same. Then, in the latter part of the ad, the situation is reversed and the copy tells us, "Now Lee Hyo-lee smiles" and "Jessica Alba weeps". The ad intends to suggest that women make no bones about telling a lie to finish with men. The company says the copy "A woman's face is lies" denotes that a woman's skin is lies, too. The two stars were the center of attention during the filming of the commercial in Vancouver, where observers commented on their gorgeous and quite similar figures. The two resemble each other in stature, shape, hair style and even healthy-looking copper skin tone. Their beauty managers took great pains to adorn the stars, who were competing for national pride. Among women, Jung Ryoe-won came top thanks to her part in “My Name is Kim Sam-soon.” Jung "is able to reflect her own natural image into the role she plays in the drama," one panelist said. "She works hard at learning her craft. If you look closely at her eye movement, tempo, breathing and reactions to her partners, you can see that she studies the script really hard.” Uhm Jung-hwa came second with 17 points and Eugene in third with 12. Uhm is said to be able to play a wide range of parts, have a lively spirit as an actress and act very naturally. After breaking with her agency DSPent after eight years, Lee ended speculation where she is headed when she concluded a verbal agreement with the CJ affiliate M-Net Media to be represented exclusively by the company for three years for a rumored W1.5 billion (US$1=W935). The contract is all drawn up and all that remains is for both sides to stamp their official seals.

Aside from the price, M-Net is said to have offered Lee a variety of perks. The plan of action and strategy for moving forward for the star prepared by M-Net’s Kim Kwang-soo reportedly played a large role in her decision. Kim is the moving force behind the success of Cho Seong-mo, SG Wannabe and See Ya.

TV Spot Pitches Korea's Sexiest Against Each Other
Top Korean stars Jeon Ji-hyun and Lee Hyo-lee are pitted against each other in single combat in the new commercials for the Samsung Anycall mobile phones.

Each, as it happens, seems to have occupied the other’s domain. Jeon was given the bad-girl role, a style expected to take off with the release of “The Devil Wears Prada” based on the fashion-industry roman a clef. Never one to be out of step with the fads, the star who has so far relied on angelic innocence, looks determined to acquire some teeth.

Korean High-Schooler to Grace Giant Tokyo Posters


The Korean actress Ara is set to become a star in Japan, with the Sankei Sports daily already running a full feature on her advertising venture in the land of the rising sun. “Korea’s new star Ara will be covering Tokyo in the form of 53 large billboards,” the daily said. According to the paper, starting from Wednesday, 53 of the 4 m by 3 m signboards will be put up in some 30 locations in the downtown area. Making use of teaser advertising, the signboards show her picture and homepage address, evoking curiosity about who she is. Through the end of this year, two more new PR signboards will follow.

The method is similar to the one used for BoA, who has now grown into a megastar in Japan. Like BoA, Ara is attached to SM Entertainment, which successfully paved BoA’s way to Japan with a shrewd image management.

Ara will not make her debut in Japan until next March. She won the role of Kulan, the lover of Genghis Khan, in a co-production between Mongolia and Japan titled “The Blue Wolf - To the Ends of the Earth and Sea.” In the competition, the odds were as steep as 1:40,000. “I’ve been dreaming of my picture hanging in Tokyo like other Korean Wave stars,” Ara told the paper. “I’m really happy my dream came true this early.” She is described as “Korea’s new queen of commercials.” Although only in her first year of high school, she started her career as a model at the age of 13 and appeared in a TV drama last year.
