I am not surprised by this. I am opposed to actual sin; but I also oppose the demonizing of any sort of valid love or preference by calling it a sin of -ism or anti -ism, and any people who justly uphold the order of charity, or the demonization of those who refuse to submit to liberalism or a false nationalism promoted by the state.

A Promising Start

But the author can't help but make unwarranted assumptions about the motivations or qualities of single men who gravitate to the alt right.

There is something to sex differences and how that has consequences in terms of political thinking. But this is not the essay one should read for a good explanation. There are correlations but also assumptions.

A Straussian Attempt to Appropriate the Alt-R

The essay takes Straussianism as the baseline for comparison. One might even say that it is trying to make Straussianism palatable to the alt-right. Still, at least it recognizes the validity of some of the alt-R. (And implicitly acknowledges that movement conservatism is weak.)

Because the habits of some “Nietzscheanized right-wing nihilists,” as Thompson labels them, along with many other sub-groups these days, do not cultivate in the soul the proper conditions for freedom, individualism, and the pursuit of happiness, what results is not a free people who are capable of limited self-government and participating with moral integrity in a market economy, but rather, a mob of “independent” minds enslaved by their own unruly appetites. It is clear that Thompson recognizes this. Otherwise, he would not lament the threat that this nihilistic movement poses to the future of American conservatism.

A rather judgmental lot, are we?

I share Thompson’s affection for the founders and classical liberalism, as well as his loathing of the alt-Right nihilists.

Have either of these two academics meet a "alt-right" person in real life?

Where's the Authenticity?

Better than what I expected, and better than anything else I've read on American Mind recently. "The Last Men of modernity are looking for a leader to show a better way, and today’s generation of liberals don’t seem to have what it takes to provide the leadership that this generation needs." Can academic illiberals can provide that leadership? I doubt it.

He doesn't say it, but perhaps the author would agree: those posing as leaders of "illiberalism" need to back their words up with action and proof that they are living the life they think others should live. Being an academic is not enough, nor is it an excuse for not doing more. And the author at least doesn't claim the mantle of leadership.
