Peter Hitchens:
Farewell to the ultimate Englishman
I'm not sure I have ever enjoyed anything on TV as much as I liked watching Patrick Macnee playing John Steed in The Avengers, especially when Diana Rigg was at his side.
Here was an Englishman - funny, chivalrous, fundamentally gentle, yet deadly to his enemies.
From his obituaries, I gather that he was really like that. What a pleasant change it makes from all those actors, famous for playing noble roles, who turn out to have been secretly mean and nasty.
He also has measured praise for Mr. Holmes.
Bridge of Spies Trailer
Saw the trailer before Jurassic World this afternoon; I thought the references to the Constitution and war with the Russians were funny, given what happened this past week with SCOTUS and the continuing neocon antagonization of Russia. It's a Spielberg movie -- is he a true-believing Jewish Yankee?

Texas Rising was probably too much a Hollywood product, even if in many ways not politically correct; what do Texan patriots think of the miniseries? (videos)
Unfortunately, I don't think Texas will resist SCOTUS.
A comment at Vox Day:
Churches should shed the whole non-profit corporate model, pastors should be 1099'd as consultants or some other suitable vocation and we start private, members only worship services in homes or on private property. The 'tax deductible' model of giving is dead as far as the church is concerned. Give offerings in cash, create shell companies and dba's to hold any property and keep some 'legit' money on the books or in a bank account to carry out missions work. Pay a token amount in taxes. Minimal participation in the system is way to go. No organizations or entities of a 'religious' nature to sue. Keep slush funds for legal expenses in case Pastors get outed and charged with 'hate speech, HEAVILY SCREEN AND VET CHURCH MEMBERS. All worship and Bible studies are private, members only affairs.
Will Catholic moral theology allow for this?

And How Did the Original Version Work Out?
Seems like a clueless, knee-jerk response to MacIntyre and Dreher.
Rod Dreher Perpetuates the Yankee Demonization of the South
His version of white guilt.
"But taking it down is still the right thing to do. There is no getting around the fact that the armies that went to battle under that flag fought for a nation and a political and social order built on enslaving Africans. And there is no getting around the fact that the same flag was resurrected in the 1950s by Klansmen and other white supremacists, and wielded as a symbol of resistance to equality for black Americans."
After all, the Stars and Stripes could also be said to be the symbol of a political order built on slavery. He still doesn't get it, and it is not clear to me why he doesn't understand that his simplified version of the reasons for secession is wrong. Noah Millman is even worse.
