The U.S. Mint has said it will begin producing a new 24-karat gold bullion coin early in 2007, hoping to capitalize on growing international demand for purer gold coins. It will mark the first time the U.S. Mint has produced a 24-karat gold coin. The coin will be slightly larger and thicker than a Kennedy half dollar, will contain one ounce of gold and will be designated a $50 gold piece.
