What Catholic orders lead the development of modern Catholic mass education? The Christian Brothers? What was their pedagogy and curricula, and what sort of books did they use? I read in the CE entry for the Christian Brothers that they promoted instruction in the vernacular, not Latin. Does this mean that they dropped the study of Latin and Greek? (Or abandoned the ideals of a classical education, in general?)
What of the methods of the teaching orders of women religious (particularly in the United States)?
Does modern Catholic mass education have any affinities with secular mass education in Europe and the US? When did Catholic schools introduce co-education at the primary and secondary level?
Diocesan schools have some sort of accreditation -- how flexible are their accrediting agencies? Could they adopt a classical education with the agencies they currently use?
