How has the preservation of storytelling and oral traditions fared in smaller communities?

Well, I don't know about the art of story telling in the areas mentioned by the article but I can tell you that the art of story telling in the cinema, at least, has been stone dead for fifty years.
Certainly a few streaks of light have broken through the clouds, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS in 1967, the original TRUE GRIT in 1969 (the current rubbishy version had me turn back to the original) and maybe a dozen others, but that's about it.
All the film story tellers are dead or retired, and we are left with this current crop of nonentities.
