The current unit for the 3rd grade is dealing with the clothing of other cultures. (Their next story: Suki's Kimono.) I think the textbook (Scott Foresman, Pearson) may have been written for California (or New York?); regardless, the textbook series promotes the multiculturalist agenda. Everyone is entitled to their own culture (and clothing) and to reject the artefacts of modern cosmopolitan Western culture (blue jeans vs. sari, etc. -- today's read-aloud story), except, of course, Westerners or white Americans. (No one, though, can reject liberalism if he is to be admitted to society.)

What are the U.S. bishops doing to promote assimilation, the education of immigrants in English and Anglo-American customs? Are they pushing for a training period during which immigrants can demonstrate their loyalty and desire to assimilate? And do they assume Ibero-Americans are good Catholics? Why? Does their religion play a factor in the bishop's reasoning on whether they be allowed to stay in the country or not? (Or get citizenship, eventually?) Do they assume that refraining from violating a country's laws is sufficient for citizenship? If that is the case, it is a rather shallow notion of citizenship.
