Clint Eastwood Replaces Steven Spielberg

Not having seen his two Iwo Jima movies all the way through I don't know how Eastwood has been as a director of war movies. Will he bring a harder, grittier edge to the movie than Spielberg would have? Possibly. The battle sequences in War Horse were ok - given the movie's rating they could not be as explicit as Saving Private Ryan. Based on what he's done recently, I don't think Spielberg could avoid sentimentalizing Chris Kyle's story.

Spielberg's Lincoln Movie

Saw a headline on FB today that the movie would be released in time for Oscar consideration. AICN story. Who will go see the movie? Will it be as well received as Amistad? I like Daniel Day-Lewis, but he might not be enough to draw me to the theater. It will undoubtedly reinforce the nationalist myth, but at this late stage of the game, how many in 20 years will care about Lincoln or the real legacy of those who founded this country? I do wonder how much revisonism has taken place in the script to make Lincoln look better than he really was.

Given the reaction against the graphic violence in the Temple of Doom (the tearing of the heart out of the sacrificial victim) that lead to the creation of the PG-13 rating, was that any worse than Nazis melting and blowing up in Raiders of the Lost Ark? Was someone or a group exercising undue influence on the MPAA to let Raiders of the Lost Ark slide with a PG rating because the depiction of such violence and gore was acceptable since Nazis were the ones dying in such a grotesque manner? After all, it was some sort of divine justice being portrayed through the opening of the Ark of the Covenant, with God's enemies being smitten by the angel of death?
