Kings. Premiere is on Hulu. How will it translate the Jewishness of the original? Can NBC do religion? From the first 3 minutes, it would seem not, as the talk about G*d by the king's advisors sounds forced and fake, as if they do not believe in Him. It almost sounds like they are taking the Lord's name in vain. Was this a problem with Saul's real court? I doubt it. How will the storytellers explain the religion? Any references to the promised land, or to the one who liberated his people? And how does one become a member of this people?
The show is like those attempts to update Shakespeare by transposing the characters and setting to a contemporary period--ultimately, it doesn't work--how can a contemporary megapolis be possible as the capital without the political economy that gives birth to it? And what if that politicla economy is mostly or completely antithetical to the religion?
