Oh, so Ashton and Demi are married

Well, Lady Downstairs, almost one year ago... I had forgotten that they had kept this secret and was not widely publicized (like, say, the recent wedding of Nicole Kidman to Keith Urban). Ashton Kutcher is on David Letterman right now; he is developing a new reality show based(?) on the movie Wedding Crashers; it sounds rather crass and either he is being disrespectful and those who secretly agreed to have this happen (and how could they not, since they could just call the police or sue?). Watching him talk and act, I have no idea what Demi Moore finds attractive about him. Bruce Willis may be a _________ guy, but at least he's a guy. Ashton Kutcher is still an adolescent.

I am going to speculate here, and it will probably say more about me than Demi.

After years with super-macho Bruce Willis, an awestruck puppy dog kind of guy must have seemed kind of cute to a woman in her thirties. I'm wondering if Bruce, though a nice guy, treated Demi like "the little woman". "Don't you bother your little head about that, honey." Etc. Was "GI Jane" Demi's way of showing that she can be tough, too?
Anyway, along comes the divorce, and those tiny little lines that appear around the eyes, and--holy mackeral!--a grey hair or two, and then some 18 year old gets a role Demi wanted, and she remembers how the actresses in their 30s looked at her when she was 18, and it is all very depressing. But then she meets a really cute, really young new star, who is all tongue-tied, and blurts out that he watched St. Elmo's Fire a million times when he was six, and blushes and spills his drink and acts like a complete dork. And whereas a girl Ashton's age would have been embarrassed and, like, whatever, Demi is highly amused. Could this very handsome, very young thing have a crush on her? She cancels the appointment with the pricey dermatologist.
And when she finds herself on an actual date with the Whippersnapper, she sees that he is awestruck by her every pronouncement. Older men tell her what they think as if it had the force of law and judge her intelligence by how closely she agrees with him. But the Whippersnapper seems to thinks that she is the goddess Athena--staggeringly beautiful, sophisicated and wise. (Good heavens, thinks Demi, and I famously have a _doll collection_!)
And, strangely, he never recovers from this delusion and, because his friends keep telling him he is a dork, he never quite understands that a guy in his twenties beats a guy in his thirties or forties nine out of ten times for looks. He thinks Demi only tolerates him because he keeps joking around and making her laugh. And she falls completely in love with this very cute, very funny guy who treats her like she is a beautiful Nobel Prize winner.

I hope this helps clear up the mystery of what Demi might see in Ashton. And why I have not ruled out dating my own Ashton.

Furthermore, I just noticed that Demi was even older than I thought when she met Ashton. Add turning 40 to the lines, the grey hairs and the starlets. (On the other hand, she has three kids, so that might not have been as big a deal as it might be to a childless woman like myself.)

Any way you slice it, it is a compliment--especially in youth-obsessed America--when a man several years your junior falls in love with you.
