A reporter finds four teenagers, ages ranging from 14 to 16, working 12 hours a day in rooms filled with dust and cotton fibre in exchange for food and in-factory accommodation. Experts lament that local authorities are not stopping the use of child labour.
Local governments seize land fraudulently from farmers
The Minister of Land and Resources said that between 2004 and 2005, half of all land seizures were fraudulent. Cultivated lands are classified as non-agricultural and seized for public projects but are then sold to private entrepreneurs. Take the case of Qinghe, where farmers discovered that they have no legal rights.
Arrest, jail terms, fines for 22 evangelical leaders
Two Protestant pastors were condemned to a year of forced labour on charges of “using an evil cult to obstruct the law”. Another two are in prison without charge and they will face the same fate. They were caught handing out Bibles.
